It is not required for those students who wish to take all four modules of the BIOL sequence, but it is required for those students who seek to skip one or more modules.

The placement exam is intended for incoming first-year students. The format and style for each module will be slightly different however, students may expect a mix of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Nearly all of the departments or programs listed below offered summer online placement exams during the month of July. Six departments offer online placement exams during the month of August: Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, Mathematics, and Spanish. Most placement exam results are valid for one year.

Online placement exams are offered three times a year: in the summer (in advance of registration for the following fall) in the late fall (in advance of registration for the following spring), and in the late spring (in advance of registration for the following fall). Placement exams ensure that your Yale courses are at the appropriate level.
